Children’s art studio to hold free self-defense clinic; Program targets parents, children

By Staff | Mar 27, 2008

A Cape Coral children’s art studio will hold its second self-defense clinic tonight with martial arts trainer Jack Harrah.

The two-hour free clinic, set up for parents and their children, will take place at 6 p.m. at Doodlebugs at 917 N.E. Seventh St. The first clinic was specifically for mothers and daughters.

“The reason the clinics are free is because the best reward you can get as a self-defense instructor is to spread martial arts knowledge throughout the community,” said Harrah.

Attendees with learn skills such as confidence building, awareness training and self-protection, he said.

To enroll in the clinic, parents are asked to call Harrah for reservations at 336-0761.

“As always, we’re very excited,” said Sarah Shifman, co-owner of Doodlebugs. “We think (Harrah) does a fantastic job. We can’t say enough good things about him.”

Shifman, who co-owns Doodlebugs with partner Wendy Hill, said the art studio plans to continue holding clinics with Harrah. Next month, a clinic is planned for pregnant women and women with infants, she said.

This will be his 75th clinic in the area, said Harrah. There are three per month in various locations.

“Attendee response is always positive,” said Harrah. “Each clinic location grows more attendees every event.”

Harrah is a city volunteer and a martial arts trainer with the Cape Coral Police Athletic League and BOD at the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

Private lessons and group needs are available upon request, and references are always available, said Harrah.
