A 16-year-old Cape Coral youth has died as the result of a head injury received during what police say was a “hood surfing” accident Wednesday afternoon.

Justin Michael Brantley was pronounced dead at Lee Memorial Hospital Thursday at 9:50 a.m., and family removed him from life support Friday, according to city spokesperson Connie Barron.

Brantley “had hopped” on the back of a 1998 Toyota Camry driven by Tyler Steven Charles Edge, 18, when he apparently fell and suffered a life-threatening head injury at approximately 4:14 p.m. Wednesday, Barron said.

Brantley, along with another passenger, 17-year-old Justin Wright, had hopped on the vehicle and Edge backed the car out of the driveway, Barron said.

Edge told police he looked back, saw Wright get off the car, saw the younger teen move as well, and so believed neither youth remained on the car as he drove south on Northeast 2nd Ave., Barron said.

But as he turned onto Northeast 21st Terrace, Edge heard Wright screaming and immediately came to a stop. He then saw Brantley lying on the road unconscious, police reports state.

Brantley was trauma-alerted by ambulance to Lee Memorial Hospital following the accident.

Investigators did not find any signs of impairment and no charges are currently pending, Barron said.

Brantley’s family was not available for comment; they requested their privacy be respected by members of the media.

Wright’s family could not be reached by telephone Friday evening.
