Judge: Woman accused in soldier’s death to be tested
A doctor will determine if Ashley East, who is accused in the DUI crash that killed Army Staff Sgt. Daniel Beougher in December 2007, suffers a seizure disorder, a Lee County judge said Monday.
East, 26, is charged with 10 criminal counts in the accident, including DUI manslaughter, leaving the scene of an accident involving death and driving without a license causing death.
Ita Neymotin, East’s defense attorney, filed a motion to have East undergo a psychiatric examination by Dr. Schaerf Frederick to determine whether she suffers seizures.
The motion was granted Monday by Lee County Circuit Judge Thomas Reese.
On Dec. 8, 2007, East’s truck reportedly crossed into oncoming traffic on Hancock Bridge Parkway in Cape Coral and struck Beougher’s jeep, killing him and seriously injuring his wife, Lauren Beougher.
East fled the scene and was later detained in New Jersey, according to reports.
East remains in the Lee County Jail without bond. She will next appear in court March 10.
A trial date has not been set.
