Tropical Twister offers parents a New Year’s night out

By Staff | Dec 28, 2008

Sometimes, parents just want to cut loose on New Year’s eve. Other times, they simply need to.
Now Tropical Twisters Gymnastics is giving parents the opportunity to ring in the New Year without having to worry about their kids, by offering a sleep over camp on Dec. 31.
Owner Lisa Johnson said she and her staff had been mulling the possibility of a New Year’s Eve baby-sitting service for a few years, and this year just seemed to fit.
“We’ve bounced it around for a couple of years,” Johnson said of her decision on Saturday. “We’re letting our other coach and his wife run the camp.”
The “other coach” is Kevin Key and his wife Mindy, both safety and CPR certified instructors, as is required by the United States Gymnastics organization.
Kids will be able to to play games, win prizes, sing karaoke, and experience gymnastics equipment like the zip line and the trampoline.
Food and New Year’s Eve accessories like hats and horns will also be made available to ring in 2009.
Though Johnson and her husband plan on having a quiet night at home on Wednesday, she said the sleep over camp really is aimed at letting those parents hankering to have some fun do so worry free.
“The kids can play game, win prizes, and have fun while the parents are worry free,” Johnson said. “They don’t have to worry about what time they have to be home and that kind of stuff.”
The cost is $50 per child, which includes dinner, breakfast, and snacks throughout the night.
Registration for the event is available through 7 p.m. on Dec. 31, and Tropical Twisters will also be holding their regular classes, as well as their winter camp, all week long leading up to New Year’s Eve.
Also, not to exclude anyone, Johnson has made it a point of keeping the sleepover open to anyone and everyone, regardless of whether or not they are members of the gym.
Members are also allowed to bring their friends, and parents can stay over if they want.
“It’s gonna be a lot of fun,” Johnson said. “They can bring their friends, too. You don’t have to be members of the gym to enjoy it.”
