Lee County deputies shot and killed a man during a confrontation in Bonita Springs on Thursday morning, according to Sheriff’s Office officials.
The man, who has not been identified, was at 11102 Torchfire Trail, off Rosemary Drive, said Lt. Robert Forrest, a spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies were in the neighborhood around 9:44 for an investigation when the confrontation began, Forrest said.
It’s unclear whether the man was armed or what the nature of the investigation was.
Miguel Lopez, 39, who lives on the adjacent Vagabond Way, said he heard three consecutive shots in the morning. Within minutes, he saw an ambulance speed by.
“I thought it was a small gauge,” he said of the gun. “I thought it was a .22 (caliber).”
Lopez said he saw three deputy cars pass by about 15 to 20 minutes before the shots.
He described Torchfire Trail as a neighborhood of older trailers. Crime hasn’t been noticeable, he said, although he feels the area isn’t safe.
Deputies have blocked off Torchfire Trail, from Vagabond Way east to Token Court.
Lee County Col. Michael Waite, third in command of the Sheriff’s Office, was on scene shortly after the shooting, Forrest said.
