Officer Damien Garcia continues to show positive signs
Cape Coral Police Officer Damien Garcia continues to show some positive signs in his quest toward recovery, officials said Monday.
Although he remains in critical condition, there are little bits of encouraging news from his family in Miami that give us hope, city spokesperson Connie Barron said in a prepared statement.
Garcia was critically injured while on duty when his motorcycle collided with an SUV on Tuesday, June 2. Garcia was transferred to a Miami hospital on June 16.
“Damien’s condition continues to show encouraging signs that he can survive this tragedy,” said Police Chief Rob Petrovich. “As each day goes by, Damien’s survival seems to be less in question, and the focus is more toward the extent of his recovery.”
Garcia’s family, who live in the Miami area, is heartened by the support they receive from the Cape Coral community as well as the stories they hear from survivors of similar injuries. They are asking for the community’s continued prayers for Damien indicating that these prayer intentions have played a role in Damien’s continued fight.
Several fund raisers have been scheduled to support Garcia and his family. A motorcycle run is set for Saturday, June 27. Registration is at the Victory Lane Café located at 4120 Hancock Bridge Parkway. The cost is $20 per bike. Motorcyclists will depart at 11 a.m. and travel a prepared route that will pass in front of the Cape Coral Police Department. The riders will proceed to Geo’s Italian Restaurant at 1140 Ceitus Terrace, off Pine Island Road. The restaurant will have a live band and food, and non-riders are welcome to join the participants at the restaurant.
Lowes Home Improvement Center on Pine Island Road will host a benefit on July 4 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. to raise funds for Garcia. The benefit will include a dunk tank, classic car show, Cape Coral Fire Department truck display and raffles. Lowes also will collect money through a bucket drive in front of the store.
