Distracted Driving Awareness Week
This Sunday, June 28th, marks the start of Distracted Driving Awareness Week in Lee County. The designation is part of local efforts under the “Stay Alive…Just Drive” program which is supported by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office and other pubic safety organizations. Deputies with the Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit will join organizers tomorrow morning at a press conference announcing the launch of next week’s awareness campaign, at 9:30 a.m. in front of Lee Memorial Hospital, by the fountain next to U.S. 41.
Driver distraction is one of the top causes of car accidents in Florida and across the U.S. According to the National Safety Council, someone is injured in an auto accident every 14 seconds. Of these crashes, 25% are directly related to driver distraction. Analysts attribute cell phone use as a contributor to 2,600 deaths and 12,000 serious injuries per year based on nationwide crash statistics.
Motorists are encouraged to follow these tips to avoid driver distractions, which can lead to needless crashes:
* Pull over somewhere safe to talk or text on a cell phone.
* Don’t eat while driving.
* Don’t apply make-up or shave while driving.
* Manage your music ahead of time by pre-programming your car radio or CD player.
* Make sure you have clear directions and double-check the map before you leave.
* Ask passengers to keep conversation to a minimum and help you navigate.
* Be well rested before getting behind the wheel.
The Sheriff’s Office hopes drivers will support traffic safety initiatives aimed at reducing crashes, injuries and fatalities on our roads. The designation of June 28 – July 5 as Distracted Driving Awareness Week is just one of several ongoing education and awareness campaigns. We offer our thanks to those who organize and participate in the Stay Alive…Just Drive program. To their credit, a recent ad campaign featuring Boston Red Sox pitcher John Smoltz has been airing since May. On July 3rd, the Fort Myers Miracle will have “Crash Free Friday” and a statewide education effort, supported by Governor Charlie Crist, is in the planning stages.
As always, motorists are urged to make traffic safety a priority. Remember to buckle-up and keep your eyes and attention on the road.
