Weekend benefit raises $4,000-plus for injured officer

By Staff | Jul 1, 2009

A motorcycle ride to benefit an injured Cape Coral police officer attracted hundreds of riders and raised about $4,200 to assist the officer and his family, officials said Wednesday.
The funds, raised for Officer Damien Garcia, will be deposited in the Fraternal Order of Police’s “special needs account” for Garcia set up at TIB Bank.
Organizers from the Saturday, June 27, ride will present the check to the Cape Coral Police Department’s FOP at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. The presentation will be at Geo’s Italian Restaurant located at 1140 Ceitus Terrace.
The next fund-raising event for Garcia, who remains hospitalized in Miami following a duty-related traffic crash, is Saturday, July 4. Lowes Home Improvement Center on Pine Island Road will host a benefit from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. The benefit will include a dunk tank, classic car show, Cape Coral Fire Department truck display and raffles. Lowes also will collect money through a bucket drive in front of the store.
