In a cage at Lee County Domestic Animal Services sits a small black tiger cat. He was trapped by a neighborhood resident as an apparently un-owned nuisance animal and brought to the shelter. The feline has had little human contact during his young life and it’s obvious he will never be a loving lap cat or family pet.
Until now there was little the agency would be able to offer the animal as it was not adoptable in the traditional sense. However, thanks to the LCDAS “Barn Buddy” Program he has a second chance at a better life.
LCDAS now permits the adoption of outdoor animals through the “Barn Buddy” Program. This program was established to provide adoption services of feral and semi-feral cats and dogs that cannot acclimate to an indoor environment but could live comfortably in an outdoor environment in a barn, farm or on rural property.
Anyone interested in adopting an animal to live in this type of outdoor setting needs to complete an adoption application. Once their application is approved, potential adopters will be contacted when an animal becomes available that could be a good match for the “Barn Buddy” Program.
This program is one more opportunity LCDAS has implemented to save the lives of animals that would have otherwise been euthanized due to their inability to acclimate to an indoor environment.
