Doughty honored as Deputy of Month
Deputy Christopher Doughty was honored at the July North Fort Myers Chamber of Commerce luncheon as Deputy of the Month.
He was nominated by Lt. Steve Edlin concerning an armed robbery incident in the area, and his commendation was presented by Deputy Jarrod Cantrell.
Cantrell relayed Edlin’s words as the officer could not attend the meeting.
The incident that gained his recognition was a July 11 call to Lee County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies were dispatched to an armed robbery at 6:53 p.m. to Fisherman’s Pub, located at #50 Pine Island Road in North Fort Myers, wrote Edlin.
A 49-years-old victim was approached by a suspect in the parking area who pointed a gun at him demanding money. Witnesses gave a description of the suspect as an Hispanic male accompanied by an Hispanic female driving a Toyota Corolla who fled the parking area headed west on Pine Island Road.
Doughty proceeded to the area.
“Deputy Doughty, being the experienced officer, began to work his way through traffic on Pine Island Road as he continued westbound with hopes of catching up to the vehicle,” wrote Edlin. “His actions paid off and soon he fell in behind the suspect vehicle.”
Doughy tailed the vehicle until he was assisted by back-up officers. A felony traffic stop was conducted by Doughty and fellow officers. Both suspects were taken into custody without incident and identified as the perpetrators by the victim.
“If not for Deputy Doughy’s experience along with his keen observations and police tactics, these dangerous criminals would have remained at large to prey on the citizens of Lee County,” Edlin said. “He is credited for his outstanding job keeping Lee a safer place to live.”
