LCEC Power to Share delivers $5,000 in emergency assistance funds to customers in need
In the summer of 2009, LCEC set out to help customers who, due to extended economic strains, struggle with tough decision between paying the electric bill or the mortgage. In partnership with the United Way Power to Share, a program funded by LCEC customer and employee donations, is providing assistance to those in need within LCEC service territory. By the end of August, just one month after the program began, more than $5,000 had been allocated.
“Times are tight right now, even for people with steady jobs. Anyone could be one missed paycheck away from dire circumstances beyond their control. We know that this is often not a permanent situation for people, and we wanted to help find a way to assist these customers through the rough patch,” said Project and Program Assistant Teresa Renkiewicz. In response to needs expressed within our community, she teamed up with Public Relations Manager Karen Ryan to develop the Power to Share Program.
The Power to Share Program is designed to be a short-term source of emergency assistance funds for those unable to pay their electric bill. This partnership ensures these funds reach the people who need them the most. The United Way administers the program and determines assistance eligibility, and LCEC promotes the program. When customers call LCEC with difficulties paying their electric bill, they are referred to United Way 211 for further assistance. The United Way helps identify and process candidates for the Power to Share Program.
LCEC is reaching out to the community to build the Power to Share program fund. “It will be an opportunity for customers to help customers. This also presents the perfect opportunity for improving service to our community through business partnerships which would extend the program’s reach.” explained Renkiewicz.
Donations to the Power to Share Program are welcome and can be made directly to the United Way; contributions must be designated toward the Power to Share Program. Learn more and make a donation from the following website: http://www.lcec.net/community/.
