School safety is a high priority for both Lee County Public Schools and the Lee County Sheriff's Department. The Sheriff's Department is responsible for providing School Resource Officers and other safety initiatives for the District's schools across the county.
With the 2012/13 school year fast approaching - the first day is Wednesday, Aug. 8 - the District and Sheriff's Office wished to provide information about school safety and highlight some of the programs in place.
One part of the safety and security efforts is Kali, a K-9 officer assigned to the Sheriff's Department Youth Services Division. Kali and her handler/partner Sgt. Hoerner conducted a demonstration showing how the K-9 officer can be used to identify illegal substances on campus (i.e. in a locker, etc.)
