The truth about school counselors

To the editor:

If we are lucky enough, each of us has had that moment in his or her life when someone else took time out to make us feel special. Maybe you were struggling with a subject or issue at school, a counselor pulled you aside to help you through it. Or maybe one of your counselors saw something in you that you couldn't see in yourself, and they pushed you to pursue that thing. Or maybe they showed you how amazing those subjects could be, and it opened up your world and put you on the path that landed you in your ideal future job.

If you've ever had a counselor that inspired you, pushed you past what you thought were your limits, or helped you in a way that is still with you today, take a moment out of your day and give them a shout out!

Behind every fabulous person is an our standing counselor! What is a counselor? I'll tell you: it isn't someone who teaches something, but someone who inspires the student to give of her/his best in order to discover what she/he already knows. A believing and compassionate listener and advocate, I had the opportunity to work with one of the greatest counselors for nine years. The love for counseling and children showed in everything she did. I was particularly blessed that "Ms. Fischer" always gave something to take home to think about besides homework. She encouraged individuality and to think for themselves instead of conforming to narrow minded view of the world around us. She inspired creative expression. Her love for counseling showed in everything she did. A few examples of how counselors make a HUGE difference is by working with children who overcome struggling with a subject or issues at schools and the effects of bullying and sexual violence which will linger and can lead to promiscuity, drug abuse, self-harming behaviors and depression-just a few of the potential consequences.

Counselors building self-esteem and self-confidence make the difference and sometimes saving a life! I have been fortunate to remain friends through the years and at 70, she still amazes me with her enthusiasm for learning. If the quote "Anyone who keeps learning stays young," then she is keeping her mind young. She is a wealth of information on any subject you might bring up. Still always smiling and chuckling and sharing funny anecdotes from the past. Thank you so much, Ms. Fischer. You were and are the best.

The object of education is to prepare the young to educate themselves throughout their lives. If all of us were privileged to have a counselor like Mary Fischer, the world would be a different place! Good counseling is one of the best things you can do to improve your experience on planet Earth.

Remember, theories don't heal people; people heal people.

Counselors will always end up giving back to students, parents, staff and community.

I can tell you from long experience; it's a gift that keeps on giving.
