More foursomes sought for Peete Classic

The North Fort Myers Chamber of Commerce will be holding its second-annual Calvin Peete Golf Classic on Saturday, Oct. 20, at the Magnolia Landing Country Club.

But even though last year's event drew a full 18 foursomes, with almost as many lined up for this year already, there is still room for several other teams to come and have fun on the links.

"This year we're shooting for 100 golfers and we're more than halfway there," said Lenny Cannova, president of the Chamber. "We still need more golfers, but we've had a lot of interest and we're waiting for the applications to come in."

Last year's event had many of its golfers sign up during the last week. Cannova said this year is looking pretty much the same.

The charity event is to honor Calvin Peete, who once lived in North Fort Myers and, before Tiger Woods, was perhaps the most successful black golfer in PGA history. As with the inaugural event, Calvin Peete's widow is expected to play.

The tournament is a four-golfer scramble, best-ball, with a $10,000 hole-in-one as well as prizes for closest to the pin, longest drive and a putting contest, with a luncheon and awards ceremony afterward.

Anyone interested in signing up can go to the Chamber of Commerce officer at the Shell Factory and pick up an application or by going to the Chamber's Web Site and clicking on the Calvin Peete link. The cost is $340 per foursome

Cannova said they are also looking for hole sponsors from local businesses for $99.

The net proceeds from the event will go toward the North Fort Myers Chamber of Commerce Foundation, which helps high school students attain college scholarships. The goal is to raise $10,000.

"Last year was a huge success. We hit our goal. This year we're shooting for a little bit better. We're very excited about the turnout we're getting for a couple years old," Cannova said. "We look forward to seeing everyone out there and having a good time."
