Arts Center to end year with membership drive

The Lee County Arts Center has had a very busy year, highlighted by Art Walks, receiving its non-profit designation, and plans to move into a new facility.

What it still seeks are additional members.

On Tuesday, Dec. 11, at 3 p.m., the arts center will hold a membership drive at Sun Country Realty at 787 Pondella Road, shortly after installing its leadership.

The event will feature food and refreshments.

"We hope the public will take advantage of this because we're going to be at Merchants Crossing in January for the new Art Walk, which is a better location," said Maryanne Howard, president of the arts center. "We're happy to have the permission of management to have the art walk there."

Howard said membership is important, since it will help provide capital. There are only about 25 members currently and Howard said the group should be further along than it is.

"We need to get this out to the public better and get more people interested. We are trying to figure it out," Howard said. "Together, the community can come out and support this initiative for the arts."

The yearly membership fee for artists is $25, and $50 for non-artists.

Before the party, the board of directors will be installed.

Howard will be installed as president, Marni Briggs will be vice president, Mark Lipton will be secretary and Rudy Berndlmaier will be treasurer.

Ron Wilder, Ruth Frank and Marjorie Newton will be directors, with the latter two being new appointees.

All this leads up to the first big even of 2019, the Art Walk at Merchants Crossing on Jan. 12 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The new location will allow visitors to also visit a place to eat or shop.

"They could even go to Joann's and pick up some canvases and paint and start creating their own artwork," Howard said. "We're very excited to be going there and management seems to be excited to have us."

RSVPs, to info@leecountyartscenter.com. are requested from those attending.
