A North Fort Myers couple are the proud parents of the first baby of the new year.

Jennifer and Sean O'Grady saw their daughter, Adilynn, enter the world on Jan. 1, at 1:07 a.m. at HealthPark in Fort Myers, making her the first baby born in Lee County in 2019.

Adilynn, who was 9 pounds, 5 ounces and 20 inches long at birth, was born after 10 hours of labor without complications, even though she was a week overdue and doctors were considering a C-section.

"It's very exciting. We didn't really expect it. We were expecting a Christmas baby, but she stayed a little longer and Jennifer was called in to induce labor on Dec. 31," Sean said. "We finally had to kick her out."

Once it became apparent Adilynn would be born right around New Year's, Sean said he was hoping she would be born just as the ball dropped. They could see the fireworks going off downtown.

Sean and Jennifer met when they were next door neighbors while in college. They were married last March.

Adilynn had a busy first evening, with her parents feeding her every 30 minutes. The family was expected to return home Thursday.

Adilynn will be going home to the small family farm with goats and chickens and horses on the property behind them.

Jennifer said Adilynn will have a least one animal of her own.

"She's getting a pony to keep all the boys away. She's not going to have them for a long time," Jennifer said.

Sean works as a virtual school teacher for Lee County, which will allow him to stay home to care for the baby. Jennifer works as an office manager.

Cape Coral had to wait a day for the city's first baby to arrive at Cape Coral Hospital.

Connor Michael Tallmadge, 8 pounds, 3 ounces and 21.5 inches long at birth, entered the world via C-section on Jan. 2 at 8:07 a.m.

His parents are Colleen and Joshua Tallmadge of Cape Coral.
