Herons Glen breaks ground on fitness center

The residents of the Herons Glen community will soon have a new, state-of-the-art fitness center.

Ground was broken on Jan. 3 for a new $1 million, 5,000-square-foot fitness facility with cardio and weight areas and professional grade workout equipment. The new facility will also feature massage and physical therapy suites.

Larry Cummings, chairman of the Herons Glen Recreation District, said the old fitness center, which was in three mobile homes in the location where the new one will sit, had fallen into disrepair.

"The floors had rotted out from termites and it needed to be expanded. We decided to demolish the buildings and put up a new first-class center made of concrete block and a tile roof," Cummings said.

The current fitness center is in the clubhouse lobby and has only half the equipment the new facility is expected to have.

Cummings said much the equipment was put into storage, which will likely be replaced with new.

The facility will also have space for therapy for residents who had surgery to get their rehab done, Cummings said.

Lotus Architecture provided the design of the new facility, which will look similar to the clubhouse, while Gates Construction will be the contractor and has started work on the facility.

"We're looking forward to getting this done on time and on budget," said Todd Gates, owner of Gates Construction, which will do much of the interior and exterior work. "We don't usually give completion time in months but in quarters, so we expect to have this finished by the end of the second quarter or early third quarter."

Cummings said residents have been very excited about the new facility.

"For two years we've been talking about this and planning it and it's finally coming to fruition," Cummings said. "We've been in the lobby for two years and it's great that we'll finally have a location."

The fitness center will be for residents only and is an amenity for all who live in the community.
