Community leaders, business owners and residents are invited to be part of one whale of a tailgating party.

The Tommy Bohanon Foundation is hosting the first Playmakers Tailgate Party on Saturday, May 11, from 5 to 9 p.m., at the Collaboratory at the South-west Florida Community Foundation in downtown Fort Myers.

This is the first fundraising event for the foundation that was founded in 2017, named for the current NFL fullback who once starred at North Fort Myers High School. Bohanon is currently a free agent after having been released by the Jacksonville Jaguars at the end of last season.

After having met its 5-year financial goals in just two years, the Bohanons decided it was time to hold a fundraiser to bring in more major players.

"Our corporate partnerships have an opportunity to meet other leaders in the community and support at-risk youth in our community," said Katie Bohanon, Tommy's wife and foundation co-founder. "It's about leaders and influencers coming to learn about what we've been up to."

Since turning pro in 2013, Bohanon has been giving back to his community through his foundation. It has provided a free football camp for the past two years during the summer (this year's will be June 22 at North High), a sports equipment grant to North Fort Myers High athletics in 2018 and just last week awarded $10,000 in scholarships through the Southwest Florida Community Founda-tion, which donated the space for the tailgate party.

The Tommy Bohanon Foundation is dedicated to supporting young athletes to reach their highest potential on and off the playing field. Its vision is to end generational poverty for at-risk youth who benefit from their programs.

Tickets are $85 through the Tommy Bohanon Foundation website or on the foundation's Facebook page. It includes food, drinks and access to live raffles and auctions as well as the opportunity to support the organization by becoming a corporate partner.

There are still corporate sponsorship opportunities, which provides for a certain amount of people coming in based on what package you select.

Space is limited, so all tickets must be secured prior to the event.

"We're aiming to bring more awareness to our foundation so we can build our programs. We hope to build on our scholarship program by adding another one," Katie said. "The sports equipment grant we gave was $3,500 and we hope to double that through another high school or middle school."
