North captures 6U championship

The North Fort Myers Babe Ruth baseball program figured going in that it had a great shot at winning the district's 6U championship.

It did, but it had to really work to get it.

That was par for the course during the District 15 Babe Ruth baseball tournament at the North Fort Myers Community Park this past weekend, which saw North's younger teams do well, with the older teams at least winning one game in 10U, 12U and 14U.

Meanwhile, the rest of the league did well to balance out the wealth, with Naples winning 10U and 14U and Clewiston taking the 12U.

Even Punta Gorda, which has been trying to become more competitive, showed great improvement, reaching the finals in 10U and 6U and winning the opening game over North before Clewiston rallied in the winner's bracket final to beat the team from the North.

The fact North did so well in the lower age groups isn't a surprise, since there were only two teams in 6U and North placed two teams, along with Cape Coral, in 8U.

The 6U team really had to fight as Punta Gorda gave North all it could handle before North won 20-10 and 23-14.

Meanwhile, the 8U team breezed through the winner's bracket, with its "A" team beating the "B" team, then Beating Punta Gorda 14-2 and Cape "A" 9-1, then watched as North "B" edged Punta Gorda 13-11.

Cape "A" and North "B" were to play for the opportunity to face North "A", but lightning eventually won over and forced the game to be concluded on Monday night, after deadline.

North had a promising start in 10U after beating Clewiston 6-4, but got trounced by eventual champion Naples 12-2 to go into the loser's bracket, where Punta Gorda ended North's season with a wild 14-11 victory.

In 12U play, Punta Gorda downed North 7-1, which made a great recovery in the losers' bracket, beating Naples 15-8 and gaining revenge on Punta Gorda with a 6-1 win to go to the finals, needing to beat Clewiston twice. Instead, Clewiston cruised 9-1 to take the title.

In 14U, North started by downing Punta Gorda 13-2 before losing to Naples 6-2. Fighting for their survival, Clewiston beat them in the loser's bracket final 11-0.

Jerry Hiesman, league treasurer, said North baseball has done a lot of work to build the kids up, thus the reason it had two 8U teams.

"We had a lot of talent, which is why we put in two teams in 8U. We're getting a lot more competitive and stepping our game up and teaching them the game," Hiesman said. "They're getting better in the younger age groups."
