Every child is entitled to that one caring adult

To the editor:

As the back-to-school season wraps up in our community, it is an important time to remember the children for which a new school is old news. The average number of children from Lee, Charlotte, Collier, Hendry, and Glades counties that are involved in the child welfare judicial system is 1,400.

Many of these children have experienced numerous school changes upon removal from their parents and will face the "first day" experience more than once a year. The lives of children in foster care are full of unknowns, including the unknown of where they will sleep on any given night. These local children have one primary need that can ease this transition and every other one they face during this unpredictable time in their lives: One. Caring. Adult.

Foster parents are the providers of safety, comfort, and support for these children. There is healing and redemptive power in an adult willing to say "I will love you. I will care for you." Our Suncoast Region continues to face a shortage of this most vital resource for OUR community's children. Foster parents are regular people with a heart to help, even just one child.

Please contact the National Youth Advocate Program for more information on foster parenting.
