North Fort Myers Neighbor

To the editor:

Certain political positions simply do not pass the common sense test. If, God forbid, one of your children or grandchildren were gravely ill; would you take them to a doctor for care or to a Republican Congressperson or Senator? I think that the answer to this question is fairly obvious. So why, I must ask, are people so willing to trust Republican politicians when it comes to the health and well-being of our planet? What we are faced with in the debate on climate change is the juxtaposition of science and politics. Science, as we all know, is largely predicated on mathematics. If one poses the mathematical question "What is 2+2?" there is little disagreement on the answer being 4. Science is largely objective using research, empirical facts and scientific principles to reach conclusions upon which intelligent people can make decisions about how to improve our day-to-day lives.

On the other side of this coin are the Republican politicians. They represent the only major political entity in the entire civilized world to decry climate science and deny the existence of climate change. Among their irresponsible actions in this regard the United States withdrew from the Paris Climate Agreement; we continue to embrace the sustainment of fossil fuel industries at the expense of renewable clean energy sources; and Republicans continue to cast doubt on the conclusions of climate scientists. One need only watch the daily news to realize that we are experiencing unprecedented weather extremes, melting polar ice caps, rising sea levels, stronger and more frequent hurricanes, and record-breaking increased average temperatures each year. One does not have to be a climate scientist to see what is happening; and yet, the Republican Party (facilitated by Fox News propaganda) continues to undermine the research that is generally agreed to by 99% of the climate scientists world-wide.

What motivates these vastly different positions on such a clearly vital issue? Politicians, as we all know, lie. They put labels on people and ideas like "Fake News" for anything that they disagree with or have no logical response to. They attempt to sway public opinion by creating doubts and fears in the minds of voters. Sadly, this shameless behavior is rarely intended to further the well-being of the American public, but to garner support for positions that will endear elected officials to those that donate money to their political campaigns. Common sense leads me to conclude that climate scientists have no such nefarious agendas.

So what are we to do? It is obvious to me that the Republican Party intends to put their collective heads in the sand on this issue until rising sea levels make their breathing impossible. As Florida residents, we should recognize that we have a tremendous amount at risk from rising sea levels. If projections are accurate, Cape Coral could be underwater and cease to exist due to rising sea levels in our children's lifetimes! This should be a matter of passionate concern to all of us just as Red Tide and overall water quality in the Gulf of Mexico.

I, like many of you, may not live long enough see how the final chapter of the climate change plays out. But, like many of you, I have children and grandchildren that I dearly love. I'm not willing to gamble their futures on unsupported political nonsense; I'm putting my money on the scientists!! As you know, 2020 will be an election year with profound impact for us all. I plan to cast my vote for the candidates that I believe have the best interests of my children and grandchildren at heart not their political donors and blind allegiance to party dogma that benefits the fossil fuel industries. What about you???
