Police: Man crashes car into tree; Owner of vehicle reports it’s stolen
A Cape Coral man was arrested Sunday after stealing a car, crashing it into a tree and fleeing the scene while intoxicated, according to police reports.
Joseph Brian Williams, 24, of 1919 Everest Parkway, was charged with grand theft auto, hit and run and DUI, the reports state.
Williams was uninjured in the crash, he reportedly told officials.
Williams had allegedly stolen a silver Nissan from the 1400 block of Del Prado Boulevard South sometime after 6 p.m. The car’s registered owner, Fransisco Morgan, reportedly said he did not give permission for anyone to drive the vehicle.
A witness said she saw Williams climb out of the stolen Nissan and flee on foot, police reported. The vehicle had been crashed into a tree in the center median of the 2600 block of Del Prado Boulevard South.
The witness reportedly later identified Williams to police.
Williams submitted to a field sobriety test and was charged with DUI as a result, the reports state.
