Police: Teen critical after ‘hood surfing’
A 16-year-old Cape Coral teen is in critical condition after attempting to “hood surf” on a moving vehicle Wednesday, according to police and hospital officials.
Justin Michael Brantley, of 2025 N.E. Second Ave., had hopped in the trunk of a 1998 Toyota Camry with Justin Wright, 17, of 309 N.E. 20th Terrace, according to city spokesperson Connie Barron.
Tyler Steven Charles Edge, 18, of 331 N.E. 20th St., was the driver of the car when the accident occurred at about 4:14 p.m., Barron said.
Edge backed out of the driveway at Brantley’s home, then began driving forward with the two passengers, Barron said.
Edge reportedly told police he saw Wright exit the back of the vehicle and Brantley appeared to have exited as well. He then drove south on Northeast Second Avenue and turned onto Northeast 21st Terrace, but stopped when he heard Wright screaming.
Brantley was lying unconscious in the road, Barron said. He was trauma-alerted by ambulance to the Lee Memorial Hospital.
Police investigators reported they did not discover signs of impairment in the accident and no charges are pending at this time.
