Deputy Dawn Mars receives Chamber of Commerce honor
Each month, the North Fort Myers Chamber of Commerce honors a local deputy as Deputy of the Month at a monthly luncheon meeting.
Local law enforcement officials from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office North Fort Myers substation begin by nominating top performers. In November, Deputy Dawn Mars was singled out.
The nomination for Mars came from Sgt. Charles Taggart, who stated the nomination was for her proactive patrolling resulting in the arrest of two individuals for loitering and prowling in the area of Woodward Avenue and San Jose Street in Palmona Park.
Lt. Steve Edlin made the presentation, noting specifics from the nomination letter:
“On Oct. 25, 2008, Deputy Mars located an open front door on San Jose Street. As she started to investigate she heard loud noises from the home. She then observed two white males jump from the window and run into the wooded area. A short time later, Deputy Mars located both subjects, identified as Robert Charles Williams and Jesse Eugene Stokes.
“Deputy Mars conducted her investigation and interviewed both subjects. During her investigation and interview, both subjects confessed to being in the house and removing items. It was discovered the home was in foreclosure and the bank would not respond to phone calls. Both subjects were arrested and transported to Lee County Jail.
Deputy Mars did outstanding proactive police work and was able to remove two burglars from the streets of North Fort Myers.”
Mars was given a gift certificate to Victory Lanes along with a Certificate of Appreciation.
“This program allows the chamber to recognize our local law enforcement for the protection of the community,” said North Fort Myers Executive Director Dina Porter.
This local distinction is the only monthly recognition received by any deputy in Lee County. Others are given throughout the year.
