Funeral arrangements have been set for a 14-year-old Cape Coral High School student, who police say was accidentally shot in the head Monday afternoon.
A memorial service for Colton Wayne Hutchinson will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Christ Lutheran Church, located at 2911 Del Prado Blvd.
Additionally, an account has been opened by friends of the Hutchinson family at Fifth-Third Bank in Colton’s memory. Donations can be made to the Colton Hutchinson Memorial Fund, account number 7432438724.
Colton, a Cape High freshman, was accidentally shot by a 12-year-old friend with a .38-caliber handgun, reports state. The gun belonged to the 12-year-old’s father, David M. Casman. The incident happened at about 1 p.m. at Casman’s home, located at 2422 S.E. 28th St.
Colton was born in Naples and enjoyed football, BMX and riding his bike with friends, according to obituary information provided to the Cape Coral Daily Breeze.
He is survived by his mother, Kimberly Ann Trimarche; father, Thomas Hutchinson; and younger brother, Dalton Hutchinson.
Casman, 49, was arrested and charged with culpable negligence for not properly securing the .38-caliber handgun and a .22-caliber handgun inside his home, resulting in Colton’s death, police said.
Casman posted $150,000 bond Tuesday, according to booking records from the Lee County Jail.
Casman’s attorney, Michael Rich, could not be reached for comment Thursday.
Court documents indicate Casman’s guns have been surrendered to the Cape Coral police as a condition of his release.
Casman lives at the waterfront home with his wife, Antoinette, and their three children, neighbors said.
The Department of Children and Families will conduct an investigation to determine if Casman’s home is a safe place for children to live.
When the incident occurred, Casman’s 12-year-old son initially told officers two masked men had entered his home and shot Colton. He later admitted that he accidentally shot Colton, reports state.
The 12-year-old had been suspended from school, and Colton skipped class to help him with yard work, the 12-year-old told officers. He told 911 dispatchers that David and Antoinette Casman were not home when the incident occurred.
The 12-year-old has not been charged in connection to the incident.
Casman is scheduled to appear in court Jan. 12, according to court documents.
