Local artists spotlighted at Harbour View Gallery

By Staff | Dec 18, 2008

Harbour View Gallery at Cape Harbour has been hosting a rotating collection of artists for more than a year now, holding receptions and selling the artists’ works in the spacious gallery.
On Jan. 6, the gallery will play host to two new artists, Cheryl Fausel, a watercolor artist, and Vic Baisley, a woodturner artist.
As founder and one of seven owners of Harbour View Gallery, Shirley Hales said the gallery plays an important role in the local arts scene.
“There’s a lot of very talented artists here in Southwest Florida, and there’s not that many venues for their work,” she said. “There are some, but we provide another place for the artists to display.”
Founded in October 2007, Harbour View Gallery was somewhat of an extension of another co-op gallery Hales was involved in in northern Virginia.
“When my husband and I moved to Florida from Virginia, I knew I wanted to start one but I didn’t have a clue where to build it,” she said.
Harbour View Gallery has been a success in its short life span, despite facing a struggling economy. The receptions have been instrumental in helping the featured artists and the gallery.
As a watercolorist herself, Hales displays her work at the gallery along with the seven other owners, blending an eclectic mix of mediums.
“We try to have a wide variety of art every month. It’s always changing,” she said.
Sales have been up and down, as varied trends make there way into the minds of collectors looking for the next big thing. Mostly, those trends have leaned toward what Hales described as “three-dimensional work,” along with photography.
Beginning Jan. 6 and running for 30 days, collectors and art enthusiasts alike will get the chance to see the new work of Fausel and Baisley. The opening exhibition will feature refreshments, and it is open to the public.
