Military support group collecting items for soldiers

By Staff | Feb 5, 2009

The Lee Memorial Military Support Group is organizing a March shipment of care packages for soldiers serving overseas and is asking members of the community for donations.
Starting today and continuing until March 5, the support group is accepting personal hygiene items, chicken-flavored dried noodles, canned goods such as ravioli and soup, snack packs, meat in pouches and tube socks. It also is accepting holiday items for St. Patrick’s Day and Easter.
Kim Gaide, coordinator of LMHS Military Support Group, said Girl Scout cookies are especially popular among the troops — including Thin Mints, peanut butter and Shortbread.
“They don’t have Publix over there to get them,” said Gaide. “They inhale the Girl Scout cookies.”
Other popular items are toilet paper, lip balm, sunblock and foot-related products, said Gaide, including foot powder and socks.
“Anything to do with the feet because they are on their feet all of the time,” she said.
The military support group is currently sponsoring 88 U.S. servicemen and women from Lee County including those stationed in submarines, on ships, in the Air Force and Navy.
“They are all Lee County grown and from Cape Coral High, Fort Myers High, Riverdale High and Mariner High,” said Gaide.
Ann Boehm, the American Red Cross liaison to the Lee Memorial Military Support Group, pointed out that shipping costs and all of the items in the care packages are entirely from donations.
“Every month we ship care packages to these soldiers,” said Boehm.
Overall, there are 11 locations where donations can be handed over. Two new drop-off spots recently added are the Zion Lutheran Church at 7401 Winkler Road and the South Trail Fire Station.
For more information, call Kim Gaide at 343-9690.
