Update on NFMU utility purchase

By Staff | Jun 2, 2009

An offer was rejected for $60-million by North Fort Myers Utilities (NFMU) who stated an asking price of $90-million, according to a brief from Commissioner Tammy Hall.

A 17-page document is attached that addresses all of the issues on the utility purchase, sent to community members from Hall’s office.

“The ball is in the air, is it going to be caught or dropped?” said Gregg Makepeace, president of the North Fort Myers Civic Association. He was playing off the words of the commission vote Tuesday which concerned the new Red Sox Stadium, but used it it in reference to the North Fort Myers Utility issue.

“The Civic Association has also been pressing for over four years for a community center,” he said. “We’re wondering how all of this effects that project.”

The center would be a much needed meeting hall and emergency shelter for North Fort Myers residents. “Currently we are very limited for space for those things,” he said.”
