TALLAHASSEE – Florida Highway Patrol has released the preliminary enforcement results from the Thanksgiving holiday travel period on Nov. 25 – 29. During the five-day heightened travel period, the Patrol beefed up its force by adding troopers who typically perform administrative duties, as well as reservists and auxiliary troopers, to patrol duty.
Troopers issued nearly 8,000 traffic citations and made 157 arrests for Driving Under the Influence of alcohol or drugs. They cited nearly 6,000 drivers for speeding and nearly 1,400 for failure to buckle up. Troopers also assisted more than 4,000 motorists and worked crashes that resulted in 21 fatalities.
“The Florida Highway Patrol enhanced our patrols to remove unsafe drivers from the streets so that families could reach their destinations safely and enjoy the holiday with friends and loved ones,” said Col. John Czernis, director of the Florida Highway Patrol, in a prepared statement released Thursday. “Throughout the holiday season we will continue our enhanced enforcement efforts with special emphasis on impaired drivers. Motorists should always designate a sober driver if they plan to consume alcohol.”
