The Cape Aquatics Swim Club is hosting a swim meet and food drive this weekend at the pool behind Cape Coral High School.
Each year the team, comprised of 130 swimmers ranging in age from 5 to 18, tries to organize some charity event to give back to the community, said coach Ed Collins.
In past years, the club asked students to bring in cans of food. This year it will host a meet where the entry fee is a $5 donation in food.
The food will benefit the Cape Coral Caring Center, a local food bank.
“We try to do something each year for charity and this is what we came up with this year,” said Collins.
The club invited different Swim Florida teams from Naples, Riverdale, Lehigh Acres, Fort Myers and Marco Island. Each branch has its own team, but when they swim together they are known as Swim Florida.
Collins said the local swim club is so popular that it is full.
“It is very popular with the kids and it has been growing over the years,” he said.
Collins said organizers do not know how many people will attend, but that they are hoping to get a decent turnout.
“We don’t know how many people are coming. It is a busy time of year for everybody,” he said.
The Cape Coral Caring Center is asking for cereal, jelly, canned fruits, spaghetti sauce and noodles, canned chicken and beef, hearty soup, baked beans and canned tomatoes.
Warm-up for the swimmers begins at 10 a.m. and the meet starts at 11 a.m. at Cape Coral High.
