A ‘skimming’ device was found at a Bank of America branch in Fort Myers Sunday.
Officers with the Fort Myers Police Department responded to 8081 Dani Drive after receiving a call from an ATM technician who discovered a skimming device on one of the ATMs at the location.
The technician was servicing the machine when he discovered the device. Skimming devices copy credit card information held on the card’s magnetic strip into memory, then transfer that information onto counterfeit credit cards. Skimming devices can copy the information in a matter of just a few seconds, thus making it nearly impossible for the victim to know they’ve had their information stolen – until after the fraudulent charges have been made.
The investigation is ongoing. Detectives do not yet know how long the device may have been in place. Anyone who may have used the ATM at the Bank of America at 8081 Dani Drive is asked to check their accounts and report any unusual activity to their bank.
