Bicyclist critically injured in collision with car
A bicyclist traveling on Del Prado Boulevard suffered life-threatening injuries Friday night when he crossed the roadway into the path of a car, officials said Saturday.
Robert Lee Berry, 26, of 1618 N.E. 35th St., was trauma-alerted to Lee Memorial Hospital after being struck by a vehicle in the 2500 block of Del Prado Boulevard North.
The accident happened shortly after 9 p.m. near the intersection of Kismet Parkway and Del Prado Boulevard. Berry was riding his silver Triax bicycle and traveling southbound on Del Prado in the outside lane. He turned eastbound across the southbound lanes, presumably to go to shopping center located at the intersection, officials said, adding his bicycle entered the path of a 1992 green Toyota driven by Daniel Daniele, 47, of 447 N.E. 8th Terrace.
Daniele’s vehicle skidded about 162 feet, and the front of his car struck the left side of the bicycle. The impact tossed Berry off the bicycle onto the hood of the Toyota and into the windshield. Berry fell off the passenger side of the vehicle, struck the pavement and came to rest in the median of the roadway. The Toyota came to a stop about 10 feet from Berry.
Berry suffered serious head trauma from the impact with the windshield. Due to the life-threatening signs of the injuries, he was transported by ambulance as a trauma alert to the hospital. Berry was in the Intensive Care Unit Saturday morning with critical injuries to the head and chest area, officials said.
The driver of the Toyota was not injured.
The investigation is ongoing, officials said.
