Littleton Elementary hosts Black History Month Read-In

Special to The Neighbor Marcus Goodsen, Brenda Bacon, Minnie Jackson, Harriet Myers, Anne Chisholm, Jeanne Craft and Cheryl Leftwich were just some of the community leaders and guests at the Littleton Elementary Read-In.

February is traditionally Black History Month and, for the third year, Dr. Carrie D. Robinson Littleton Elementary School has done its own special event for the occasion.

“We invite guests from Lee County, North Fort Myers, Cape Coral and Fort Myers to a special Read-In,” said Principal Monica Broughton. “The book this year for the Read-In was ‘More Than Anything Else.’

“It was a fantastic day,” she said. “The guests really enjoyed themselves. They went into the classrooms, read and talked to students, answered questions and all said they are looking forward to doing this again next year.”

The guests are all role models for students, and come from diverse professions and backgrounds.

Participants this year included Teresa Brown, Fort Myers council member-Ward 1; Principal Joe Williams III of J. Colin English Elementary; Teacher, High Tech North Melody Allen; Gerri Ware, Realtor; Paulette Sapp-Peterson a retired judge; Robert Cooper, assistant principal-Littleton Elementary; Jeanne Craft, Realtor; Cheryl Leftwich, health care administrator; Catherine Francis, retired principal; Dr. Derrick Donnell, principal-Caloosa Middle and a Cape Coral City Council member; Esmond Lewis, attorney; Harriet Myers, retired sales manager for Lee County Visitors and Conventions Bureau; Marcus Goodsen, executive director of Fort Myers Housing Authority; James Middlebrooks, retired educator; Linda Guerrine, director of Donor Development-FGCU; Barbara Ramis, regional director of PIRCS; Brenda Bacon, Banker; Winston Bishop, principal-Sunshine Elementary; Dr. Ami Desamour, director of Budget-SDLC; Anne Chisholm, retired educator; and Minnie Jackson, retired health care administrator.

Littleton Principal Broughton, staff and students are all looking forward to the event next year.
