Spots still available at local afterschool program
Spots are still open for an affordable afterschool program at the North Fort Myers Recreation Community Center Club Rec – with an average cost per day of $1.13.
“It is cost effective and a fun, safe, clean environment for children to be in while their parents are still working,” said Lee County Parks & Recreation Supervisor Mabel Vega.
Located behind the NFM Library, the North Fort Myers Community Recreation Center is offering the after school program Monday through Friday from 2:30 to 6 p.m. The cost is $100 per session, with that average cost per day of $1.13.
Participants will learn the benefits of recreation, healthy lifestyles, teamwork and caring for their environment through organized games, sports and clubs, arts and crafts, homework assistance and free tutoring services.
Session One will run now through Dec. 17, and Session Two Jan. 3 to June 10, 2011.
Experienced parks personnel will lead Club Rec.
“When you combine my experience, and Senior Recreation Specialist June Christine Susterich’s experience, we have over 30 years experience in working with children through parks and recreations departments,” said Senior Parks & Recreation Specialist Libby Olive.
“We always have our organized games, clubs such as a walking club, jump rope club and a sewing club where kids learn to sew.
“We’ll have volunteers returning this school year that help with homework and also and one special guest speaker a month. One year it was a professional football player, and someone that comes and provides nutritional programs for children. We usually have someone from the Sheriff’s Departments as well.”
Children must be 8 years old (second grade) and up to age 12. For more information, call 652-4512 on go to leeparks.org.
