T-shirt sales to benefit veterans, families

By Staff | Aug 30, 2010

A Cape Coral resident is raising money for the Armed Services Foundation and the Wounded Warriors Project for the 10-year anniversary of 9/11 next year.
“I think it is important to take care of the servicemen,” John Giaquinto said. “We have lost a lot of soldiers, so it is time to remember them because I don’t want people to forget.”
Giaquinto said he printed the T-shirts in June and has sold approximately 100 out of 1,000 shirts. He hopes more will be printed, so he can sell as many as possible to help two charities.
“I am trying to get everyone to remember,” he said. “I started a year early to get the T-shirts going and the information out there.”
It’s the 10-year anniversary, he said, adding he “figured it’s kind of big.”
Giaquinto said the money raised from the $15 T-shirts will be split in half, so each charity will receive the same amount of money.
“Buying a shirt may renew your patriotism,” he said.
The T-shirts, which are size small to 3X, are white with the saying “United We Stand” at the top and “We’ll Never Forget” at the bottom. The shirt, which was designed by Giaquinto’s friend, has an eagle, American flag and the twin towers depiction.
“The design is painted, so the shirt will wear out before the picture fades,” he said.
Giaquinto said he is also contacting other groups and organizations to gain additional help and awareness in selling the T-shirts and raising money.
Next year, Giaquinto will be hosting a fund-raiser with the Miracle baseball team to help raise additional money and awareness.
“I am trying to get groups who want to purchase a lot of shirts,” he said.
Individuals can purchase the 9/11 T-shirt on ebay.com or by calling Giaquinto at (239) 634-0131. The T-shirts can also be purchased through www.RemembranceFoundation.org.
The Armed Forces Foundation, which is a non-profit organization based out of Washington, D.C., provides assistance to members of the military family through financial support, career counseling, housing assistance and recreational therapy programs.
The Wounded Warriors Project, a nonprofit organization, began after a group of veterans and brothers were watching the evening news and were moved by what wounded soldiers were experiencing while returning home from Afghanistan and Iraq. The organization provides tangible support for the severely wounded to help them recover and heal both physically and mentally.
