Republicans caused the economic disaster

By Staff | Aug 31, 2010

To the editor:

Although probably an exercise in futility, we will try once again to correct some misinterpretations.

In the last two years of the Bush administration, the Democrats did not have a 60 vote majority in the senate – without which no action is possible (if you care to notice). And with a Republican in the White House, veto would have been all but certain.

The stimulus money is nearly gone, and another program would wipe it out, thus delaying recession recovery even more, hard as it is, to come by. The quickest and surest way to cure recession takes time and massive spending, so you can see why it is taking so long.) Stimulus II may yet be required, but we know that the penny-pinchers in Congress wont hear of it.)

The agency (MMS) charged with drilling oversight was prevented from functioning (Bush holdovers), and it has been revamped recently, as we can see the results of inaction. Capping the well was tried as soon as feasible, but it didn’t work at first.

The Republicans caused the economic disaster – and they were not about to cure it – even if time allowed (which it didn’t).

Thirty plus millions is hardly a “small population,” and the health care reform certainly aimed at helping them, as well as the rest of us. The theory is that if you expand the number of customers, the prices should go down – which is why we all need to be involved. (Insurance companies aren’t known for logic, so anything is possible.)

I’m rather sure that most illegal immigrants would rather have a visa (if they could afford one); however, it takes up to five years to obtain one in Mexico City. Could your family stop eating for that long? The ’86 law has been proved to be unenforceable, which is why more isn’t done in that endeavor. Congress has promised to write a better bill this time – if the obfuscatory will get out of the way. We will see no big improvements until that happens.

And when a foreign dignitary deigns to address the Congress, it is customary to applaud at the end of the speech (whether you finally agree or not).

We need to rethink the reality that we now have two generations that have not been subject to military service and while service is invaluable experience, it is not a constitutional requirement for any office (nor should it be).

All government agencies must have managers (czars) in order to get anything done, that should never change. And while they could do better, they are getting the job done. In fact, the best jobs since LBJ.

Finally, if you don’t have a choice, then you need to change it so that you do have that freedom of choice – which is what is being done today.
