‘Bikers, Blues and BBQ’ set for Saturday, Sept. 11
Harley Davidson of Fort Myers is hosting one of the more unique 9/11 events Saturday, as “Bikers, Blues and BBQ” will hit the streets, the stage, and of course, the grills.
Festivities kick off at 9 a.m. for the second annual 911 Appreciation Ride. At the cost of $10 per rider, bikers will head east to Labelle where breakfast at the Rodeo Bar and Grill in LaBelle.
Riders are urged to head back to the Harley Davidson store between 11:30 am – noon for the second event, the Heroes Tribute. Lee County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Chris Hodges said the tribute will honor the heroes of 9/11, as well as local heroes of public safety and the military.
The local heroes will judge the tastiest part of the day, the rib-cook off, as 10 teams compete to see who has the best tasting ribs in Lee County. There are still a few spots available for teams who want to compete in the rib cook-off, according to Hodges, who said that each team pays $25 fee to register.
Each team will cook nine slabs of ribs for tasting and for the judges. People can purchase sampling tickets for a dollar each. Each sample requires a single ticket.
While the event is free and open to the public, proceeds from the ride and rib cook-off will go to benefit the Communications Fund of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.
Hodges said the fund is set up to pay for training for 911 staff, to make sure their skills are up to date.
“It’s going to allow us to go to classes and conferences and get the new technology and knowledge and keep our agency updated,” Hodges said. “It also helps us keep other local public safety agencies updated as well.”
Music will be provided by Nashville recording artist Ronnie Morgan, who will also be singing the Star Spangled Banner.
