County manager recommends Lee not pursue swim center
Lee County should not pursue a proposal submitted by the National Swim Center Corporation, county staff recommended Wednesday.
The proposal that was submitted by the National Swimming Center Corporation on Aug. 25 was non responsive, according to a memo by County Manager Karen Hawes sent to county commissioners.
The memo also stated that they did not provide a financial commitment, which would place the county in an unacceptable position for financial risk.
The proposed project budget of $36 million was provided by the National Swim Center Corporation. According to Hawes’ memo “Lee County is considering a cash investment of approximately $4.5 million.”
Hawes instructed the National Swim Center Corporation to provide a detailed explanation as to the source of funds for the remaining $31.5 million needed to complete plans to convert the old Red Sox stadium into a competitive swimming complex.
The letter also requested the most current information regarding the “revised site plans, cash flow projections and attendant assumptions for the project.”
County officials contacted Wednesday said they had not yet seen the recommendation memo.
