By Staff | Sep 28, 2010

On Sept. 1, the United States Marshals Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force, consisting of members of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Warrants Unit, United States Marshals Office and Florida Department of Law Enforcement, received information that a wanted fugitive from Southwest Florida from a 1993 vehicular homicide case was living somewhere in Georgia.
According to a traffic crash report taken by the Fort Myers Police Department on April 9, 1993, the fugitive, identified as Donnie Lee Adkins, 35, a white male, was operating a vehicle after consuming alcoholic beverages with several of his passengers. The victim, identified as Frederick Shields, reportedly climbed out of the vehicle’s window and on to the roof while the vehicle was moving. Adkins swerved the wheel causing Shields to fall off. When Adkins realized Shields was no longer on the roof, he turned the vehicle around and located Shields on the ground.
Shields later died as a result of his injuries.
Adkins told the other passengers to tell police that Shields had just fallen out of the vehicle while sleeping. During the investigation, prior to being interviewed, Adkins fled the state of Florida. An arrest warrant was issued for Adkins on Feb. 28, 1994, for vehicular homicide.
After receiving the tip that Adkins was living in Georgia, detectives began a diligent background search and located a residence for him in Appling County, Ga. A lead was sent to the United States Marshals South East Regional Task Force in Georgia.
Task Force Officers there continued the investigation and located Adkins at approximately 6 p.m., Sept. 24, arresting him without incident for the outstanding warrant.
