By Staff | Sep 28, 2010

ANDREA GALABINSKI Many North Fort Myers youths are involved with scouting, an organization that will benefit from the event, which provides numerous activities.

The Rotary Club of North Fort Myers has announced the date of its upcoming golf tournament, and is now seeking sponsors and players.

The event will be held Saturday, Oct. 23, with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. The cost to play is $65 for golfers, and there is an opportunity for $100 hole sponsors.

Proceeds will benefit both North Fort Myers High scholarships and local scouting.

“The North Fort Myers Rotary Scholarship is one of the most generous scholarships we receive,” said North Fort Myers High School Principal Kimberley Lunger. “It’s great to have the Rotary take part in our school and the future education of our students.”

Officials that represent the local Boy Scouts of America are also thrilled that the fund-raiser will benefit local scouts.

“In 2010, the Boy Scouts of America will celebrate 100 years as an organization,” said scout executive and C.E.O. of the Southwest Florida Council of the Boy Scouts of America Greg Graham.

“Boy Scouts of America founded as a means to prepare every eligible youth in America to become a participating citizen and leader,” he said. “The Boy Scouts of America has more than fulfilled its mission. In 2010, as we celebrate our first 100 years, we not only reflect on our rich history, but lay the foundation for a strong future, as well.”

He said that over 100,000 million youths have been involved in scouting in this country since its inception. The Southwest Florida Boy Scout Council serves over 29,000 youth and 3,775 volunteers youth in Charlotte, Collier, Desoto, Hendry, Lee, Manatee and Sarasota counties.

Funds from tournament will go to directly to support all North Fort Myers scouting programs by providing special assistance to families that need help with registration fees, uniforms, handbooks and Eagle Award Kits and other youth recognitions.

“By supporting the community scouting program you will insure every youth in the North Fort Myers area can be afforded an equal opportunity to participate in a quality scouting program distributing funds to those that need it the most.”

“It is a fun filled event, with door prizes and more, our 19th year doing it,” said Ray Hair, who is chairman for the event for the Rotary. “It offers players the chance to support scholarships and the scouts.”

Hair noted the great site of Magnolia Landing.

General manager Brian Wasser said his organization is looking forward to hosting the event, and has hosted many Rotary functions.

“Anything that supports the local community and brings local businesses together is fantastic,” he said.
