Beach taps former Cape P&Z commissioner as economic development director
The Town of Fort Myers Beach has filled the vacancy for the position of Community Development director. Walter Fluegel, a Cape Coral resident who most recently was the Planning and Zoning Commissioner for the City of Cape Coral, is expected to begin work Monday, Oct. 18, according to FMB Town Manager Terry Stewart.
“We’re looking to get that organization working to their capacity,” said FMB Mayor Larry Kiker. “I’ve heard many good things about the new director, and I look forward to working with him.”
The Town’s Community Development Department administers and enforces zoning and land development regulations, building regulations, coastal and flood regulations and local environmental standards, to encourage and promote in accordance with present and future needs the safety, health, order, convenience, prosperity, and general welfare of the citizens of the Town of Fort Myers Beach and to recognize and promote real property rights.
The Department also provides staff support to the Town Council for land development regulation matters and other matters as assigned, and to the Local Planning Agency and Historic Preservation Board.
Fluegel takes over for Dr. Frank Shockey, who resigned a few months ago.
