The Dr. Piper Center for Social Services, Inc., which works with many local citizens, will hold a “Make A Difference Day” project on Saturday, Oct. 23.

It is an annual event, and this year the focus is car maintenance. The goal is to support low-income senior volunteers who provide transportation for frail elderly clients to maintain their vehicles and more.

The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“There are about 60 volunteers throughout Lee County who drive seniors to shopping, doctors appointments and more in Lee County,” said senior Employment/Development Director Cheryl Holland of the Piper Center. “We have several North Fort Myers volunteers to help them. I have three committed and need at least two more.”

Area businesses are also donating to the cause. Both Wal-Mart off Pine Island Road and Sweetbay Supermarket off Bayshore Road have contributed to the cause with gift certificates.

But hands-on individuals are still needed, Holland stressed.

This will be a Senior Car Care Day. Volunteers will do car washes and a Car Fit Program and organizers will give out coupons for oil changes.

The Dr. Piper Center has also teamed up with with Pam’s Motor City Automotive, Guardian Angel Transport, Carfit Florida, American Legion Post 0038, SW FL Safety Council, CAMEO, Enterprise Holdings, Family Home Health Services, NAPA AutoCare Center and National Active & Retired Federal Employees Association for the event.

“The local senior companions in North Fort Myers live and serve clients in North Fort Myers,” Holland said. The event itself will be held in downtown Fort Myers at the Dr. Piper Center, 2607 Dr. Ella Piper Way.
