Radiation a risk

By Staff | Dec 7, 2010

To the editor:

X-ray scanners used at airports for screening passengers subject people to ionizing radiation. Experts say that the images can be produced by low radiation dose to each passenger. Digital X-ray can produce images at very high radiation doses. Maybe nobody will lose their hair or sight from airport scanners, but there is a risk of new cancers from not-so-low doses administered to many passengers. The cheap way to get a better picture can be to increase radiation. Ask who is responsible for control of your risk, next time you are exposed to X-rays.

There is a moral aspect to radiation protection. Is it correct to irradiate me to protect you?
