Cape Coral police have charged a man in last week’s Walgreens robbery.

David T. Bernier, 38, of 4675 E. Barbato Court, Invergrove Heights, Minn., was arrested and charged Monday with one count of robbery with a firearm.

As of Tuesday, he remained at the Lee County Jail on $100,000 bond.

At 5:45 a.m. Thursday, a man entered the Walgreens at 1534 Cape Coral Parkway, W., selected a fan and brought it to the register as if to purchase the item. As clerk began to ring up the fan, the man produced a handgun.

The man demanded money from the register and the clerk complied.

The man then fled the store on foot with the cash and the fan.

Monday night, detectives received a tip that the robber was Bernier. The tipster said Bernier and a woman were staying at a motel in Fort Myers.

He was reportedly driving a Saturn with Minnesota license plates.

Police located Bernier and the woman at the motel and brought them in for questioning. Bernier reportedly stated that he had been staying with a friend only two blocks from the Walgreens for two weeks while he was on vacation.

The clerk reportedly identified Bernier as the man who robbed her.

During a search of the home where he was vacationing, officers found the fan taken during the robbery, officials said. Bernier was taken into custody.

“This partnership with our community is as strong as it’s ever been,” Lt. Tony Sizemore, spokesman for the CCPD, said in a prepared statement. “It has enabled our officers and detectives to solve countless crimes.”

Bernier has a court appearance scheduled for Friday.
