NFM Tree Lighting is set for Dec. 15

By Staff | Dec 4, 2018

Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. As we finish off leftover turkey and a variety of casseroles, Christmas and Chanukah are already upon us.

The North Fort Myers Civic Association has had an annual tradition held at the Recreation Center – same location we have our meetings – a community Christmas Tree Lighting. It’s been expanded to be a North Fort Myers Coalition (Civic Association, Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club) all day event. We’re barely two weeks out from Dec. 15.

Please mark your calendars for what should be a fun filled day. It’ll be 9:30 a.m. -6 p.m., ending with the Christmas tree lighting. The entertainment for the day is nearly filled. The new tree (small, but will grow each year along with North Fort Myers) is in place and will be ready for the event.

If anyone knows of anybody who would like to have a free vendor tent from which to sell or display Christmas type articles (including Christmas gifts) please let Doug Dailey (or a Board member) know, so we can save them a spot. My email is liptonapc@aol.com.

NBC2 meteorologist Robb Dunns will be our emcee for the event. Thank you Robb! As many of you know from following my column, with the help of the county commissioners, we replaced the old tree (that left a lot to be desired) with a young, lovely tree that will grow with North Fort Myers.

Well, this year the Dec. 15 lighting events include:

* 9:30 11:30 a.m. Breakfast with Santa (we paid his way from the North Pole)

* 12:30 p.m. Introduction and Days Schedule

* 1 p.m. Music by Birdie Lee

* 2 p.m. Littleton Elementary Chorus

* 3 p.m. Littleton Elementary Line Dance Group

* 4 p.m. North Fort Myers Academy Strings

* 5 p.m. North Fort Myers High Choral Group

* 6 p.m. Christmas Tree Lighting

The Lee County Arts Center will hold its next art walk in January. New venue. It will be at Merchant’s Crossing, not at Hancock Bridge Square. With snowbirds in town we expect it will be a lively event – lots of vendors and a large community turnout, especially at the new location.

I know we will try to work off those pounds from Thanksgiving, but we all know December is not the month for that. So, our best intentions will turn into New Year’s resolutions. Whatever holiday you celebrate this time of year, we are all part of the north Fort Myers Community. Enjoy friends and family. Reach out to those in need and count your blessings.

And remember, there is no December Civic Association meeting. But we hope to see you Jan. 8, 2019 (yes, 2019!) at 6:30 p.m. 2000 N. Recreation Park Way.
