There is a new restaurant in town offering up a combination of hibachi and seafood fare.

King’s Crab held its official grand opening Friday at its location at 535 Pine Island Road in North Fort Myers (located in the Walmart plaza) after holding a soft opening for the past few weeks.

The Wang family, Jimmy and Leo, along with young Andy, are the owners of the new place. They have owned restaurants for more than 20 years, starting in New York and coming to Florida in the Tampa area before coming here in 2004.

“We wanted to bring something big into North Fort Myers. We think it’s a challenge because some people say fine dining in North Fort Myers won’t work, so we’re here to take on the challenge,” Andy said.

King’s Crab is going to do an unusual fusion of seafood and Japanese cuisine. The soft open, where customers got 20 percent off, allowed them to get any kinks out.

“Most restaurants will do either one or the other, but we’re trying to do both real well. Some people want seafood and Japanese rice, and we’re trying to offer that,” Andy said. “I have friends who don’t like seafood, but they may like Hibachi steak.”

Many of their lunch offerings are under $10, featuring boiled seafood and fried baskets and hibachi. Dinners are pretty much the same, only with bigger plates of food.

And with a name like King’s Crab, they offer shellfish like shrimp, crab legs, blue crab, lobster tail, clams and mussels. They also have signature dishes such as their low country boil, which can be purchased in different degrees of spicyness.

“It’s a great package deal offered at a good price. We are proud of the fact that most of our guests get full rather than pay a lot and still be hungry,” Andy said. “A lot of people take their food home with them.”

King’s Crab also has a full liquor bar with sake, and was offering two-for-one beer during its open. They hope to start up Happy Hours soon.

The seafood combos are recommended, especially the fried catfish, as are the hibachi combos, which offer steak.

“This is a family-owned restaurant. This is a special experience for the guests. This isn’t a chain,” Andy said. “People here like to eat at locally-owned places. I hope the people come and support us.”

King’s Crab is open daily from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., except Friday and Saturday when it’s open until 10:30 p.m. For more information, go to their Facebook page or call 656-2828.
