After months of closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the North Fort Myers Recreation Center reopened for regular business and programs Monday along with all the other Lee County rec centers.

Employees were working hard to get the facilities ready for the public, making sure everything was in place to make them as safe as possible.

Safety and adherence to health-related guidelines will be key to bringing people back to the places that many people consider one of the hubs to the community, especially seniors.

“The safety of all our park guests is extremely important to us. That’s why we will continue to follow CDC guidelines and increase the cleaning of high-use surfaces,” said Jesse Lavender, Lee County Parks & Recreation director.

Lee County recreation centers were closed down in March when the pandemic hit and, with the exception of summer camps, remained closed throughout the summer.

In North Fort Myers, traditional camp was held in the recreation center, while middle school camp was in the concession/4-H building located near the football fields. That camp was extended from seven to 11 weeks when the opening of schools was delayed.

“We are excited for the opportunity to re-open our center and start providing additional recreation opportunities to our residents,” said Lisa Weaver, supervisor at the North Fort Myers Recreation Center in a statement.

Parks staff along with the county’s contracted janitorial services vendor will continually clean all high-use surfaces throughout each center, office and pool during hours of operation.

Signage is posted for following Centers for Disease Control guidelines and social distancing. Plexiglass shields are installed at all public service desks and hand sanitizer will be provided to the public.

“The community centers are important to our residents and this safety plan protects our community while allowing these vital services to continue,” Lavender said.

Also, the North Fort Myers Community Pool will resume classes and normal operating capacity (previously 25 percent capacity) at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

The North Fort Myers Recreation Center is at 2000 N. Recreation Way.

The North Fort Myers Community Pool is at 5170 Orange Grove Blvd.
