Guest Column: A Christmas Message to North Fort Myers

By Doug Dailey - | Dec 16, 2020

As we approach the end of a very unstable 2020, we all look forward to better things in 2021. However, during this past year, we as a community have managed to come together to help our fellow neighbor with sympathy and compassion in helping to ease the strain that 2020 has been placed upon many.

We at the North Fort Myers Civic Association have seen firsthand the generosity of our community, and we are extremely thankful for those that have contributed in their own way to helping make North Fort Myers a better place for us all.

In 2020 the North Fort Myers Civic Association created two new special events to also help our community and recognize those who make North Fort Myers the special place we all love and call home. The North Fort Myers Civic Association created the Palmona Park Christmas Toy Drive and the North Fort Myers Community Awards Program as on-going programs in support of our community. These events will become annual functions of the North Fort Myers Civic Association in service to our community.

The Palmona Park Toy Drive is currently accepting Toy Donations at our drop off locations at the North Fort Myers Recreation Center, All-American Printing on Bayshore Road just east of Weavers Corner, and the Liberty Tax Office in the Weavers Corner Plaza. Presents will be handed out by Santa and his elves to the children of Palmona Park on Saturday, Dec. 19,, beginning at 11 am in a parade-style route throughout Palmona Park. This will be a first for the Palmona Park area, and the North Fort Myers Civic Association deeply appreciates the community support and outpouring already given to this point.

Also, in 2020 the North Fort Myers Civic Association created the North Fort Myers Community Service Award Program. This is a recognition program for those that contribute to North Fort Myers through giving, in their own way to help make North Fort Myers a better place for us all. There are four levels of awards for this program. The first being the creation of the Tom Cronin Award to recognize the” North Fort Myers Person of the Year”. This award is named to honor the late Shell Factory owner Tom Cronin for his many contributions to the North Fort Myers Community. The second award is the Diamond Award to recognize a female in North Fort Myers that has made a significant contribution to North Fort Myers. This award is named to honor Ms. Cheryl Diamond who was our first and to this date only female President of the North Fort Myers Civic Association. Our third award is the Pioneer Award which recognizes an individual who in the past made a significant contribution to the North Fort Myers Community. Our fourth and final award is the North Fort Myers Community Service Medal which is to honor a special achievement by an individual or group that reflects positively upon the North Fort Myers Community. You can learn more about these awards and nominate a person or group on our website at NFMCIVIC.COM

The North Fort Myers Civic Association wants to take this time to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. From our families to yours may your Christmas Season be happy and joyous and may your 2021 be fruitful and prosperous. We as a community stand strong and we are proud of our North Fort Myers Community in how we always come together during difficult times, because that’s what we do in North Fort Myers. Merry Christmas to all.
