AMVETS inaugural golf tourney seeks sponsors, teams

AMVETS Post 81 is inviting the public to tee off with them.

The organization will hold its inaugural AMVETS Post 81 golf tournament on Saturday, March 6, at Blue Heron Pines in Punta Gorda.

Sign-ups start at 9 a.m., with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. The tournament is an 18-hole scramble, best ball, with teams of four.

Bruce Clarke said the proceeds will go toward a deck on the back of the building to expand seating capacity.

“The more seating we have, the more we can help veterans with the events we hold,” Clarke said.

A new building is planned for the organization, but Clarke said that is a couple years away as they try to raise funds.

Clarke took the assignment of starting a tournament, having organized several tournament and leagues, as well as working on a golf course while living up north.

“We tried to do the tournament in North Fort Myers, but courses are so expensive and I was lucky to have friends who live in Blue Heron Pines and he talked to the pro who has ties to veterans and he said he would talk to corporate and got a great deal,” Clarke said.

There will be some course challenges, contests for the longest drive, closest to the pin and a putting contest where the winner gets a $100 gift card.

The Auxiliary 81 ladies will staff a beverage cart, players will get a complimentary hot dog and chips, and there will be a steakhouse banquet at 4 p.m., along with prizes, raffles and awards. You can also have “only dinner” for $12.

The cost is $60 per person or $240 per team, with a maximum of 20 teams, of which the tournament has mostly filled. Carts are included.

While there are sponsors, Clarke said they can always use more. They have received many donations and companies willing to sponsor holes. They can always use more sponsors, as well as door prizes.

“We’re looking for people to sponsor the closest to the pin and long drive for men and women,” Clarke said. “We also have $75 hole sponsors with signs we make.”
