In 2019, SWFL Inc. approached the School District of Lee County with an idea to help its students celebrate entering the workforce after high school graduation with as much enthusiasm as student-athletes who select a college team do — a “Workforce Signing Day.”

“There are many good jobs in our region that don’t require a college degree,” said Tiffany Esposito, President & CEO of SWFL Inc. “We’re always looking for creative ideas to bring attention to the variety of career paths available and to celebrate the students who jump into the workforce and take advantage of those opportunities.”

SWFL Inc., the regional chamber of commerce, partnered with the School District of Lee County and several co-hosts to hold the inaugural Workforce Signing Day on May 13, including: MY Shower Door, D3 Glass and the Lee County Economic Development Council.

The event hosted nearly two dozen graduating high school seniors from across Lee County who walked up to a stage and signed a certificate with their new employer. Parents, employers, teachers, sponsors and legislators attended the event to cheer on the students.

“This was a wonderful opportunity to recognize and celebrate our seniors in a new way,” said Kelly Thawley, career specialist with the Career & Technical Education Department at the School District of Lee County. “We’re looking forward to making the event even larger next year!”
